JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Growth Editor

REPORTS TO: Editor, North Africa

BASE: Tunis

DURATION: 12 months with a possibility of extension

BBC Media Action

We are the BBC’s international charity, and we believe in the power of media and communication for good. We work across more than 20 of the world’s poorest and most fragile countries, supporting the independent media essential to democracy and development. Each year, our projects and programmes reach 100 million people facing poverty, inequality, and insecurity with information they can trust, helping to improve health, bridge divides, challenge prejudice, and save and change lives. We are independently funded and rely on the valued support of our donors and partners.

Our North Africa operations are based in Tunis. From there we deliver a portfolio of media projects, and work to ensure they are delivered on time, to the highest possible standard, and in accordance with BBC editorial values and BBC Media Action best practice.

Overall Purpose of Job

The Growth Editor is the growth champion for the El Kul Libyan social media platform. You will work with the Editor, a team of staff and freelance social media producers, and media trainers and mentors, to deliver significant and sustainable increases in reach and engagement on El Kul in line with the project’s objectives. This involves identifying new audiences that El Kul should reach, creating a strategy to reach them, implementing that plan with the production team, monitoring the performance of the plan and adapting it according to the findings and the evolving context in Libya.

We are therefore looking for someone with a deep and cutting-edge understanding of how to grow an audience on Facebook, Instagram, and other social media platforms. You must be as comfortable using tools such as Google Analytics as you are pitching to an editor, managing boosting, or guiding story producers to try new tactics to better engage their audiences. 3. Engaging and interacting with our communities across social platforms and studying research findings and analytics to determine what they want from El Kul.
  4. Analytics. Lots of analytics.
  5. In close collaboration with the Editor, leading the editorial process in terms of the growth of these new audiences, and engagement by all audiences by pitching new sources of stories, identifying topics and themes that will resonate with a social audience, and planning targeted content production accordingly.
  6. Directing producers to develop and distribute content to these strategic new audiences.
  7. Using quantitative and qualitative sources, providing feedback on performance and engagement with El Kul to editors, project managers and staff and freelance content producers.
  8. Continuously tracking and reporting to the Editor and Project Manager at least weekly on progress towards formal project targets and indicators and being ready to explain this progress to other colleagues, partners, and donors.
  9. Monitoring relevant editorial and social content on competitive Libyan sites and social feeds and using these insights to further evolve the El Kul social strategy.
  10. Building strong links within BBC Media Action globally and with the rest of the BBC to ensure resources are used effectively, to understand emerging best practice, and to ensure that the El Kul strategy is at the forefront of the BBC’s digital growth strategy.
  11. Developing, implementing, and monitoring the impact of, a strategy for paid boosting and advertising for the El Kul accounts.

Required skills, knowledge and experience:

  1. A track record in formulating, and being a key part of the implementation of, strategies that have delivered proven audience growth of over 25% per year for social media platforms with audiences of more than 100,000.
  2. Curiosity about, and in-depth understanding of, the latest global and regional trends in digital media consumption, publishing best practice, online analytics, audience behaviour, real-time data tools and emerging technologies.

  5. A BS or BA in journalism or digital marketing and at least two years’ experience working as a media producer applying international production and editorial standards. Or a university degree in an unrelated degree with at least four years’ working experience in the media sector.
  6. Proven ability to work collaboratively with different departments and disciplines to deliver shared audience objectives.
  7. Excellent communication skills and direct personal experience of successfully assisting producers to shift their production and dissemination practices in order to grow reach and engagement.
  8. Strong attention to detail in qualitative and quantitative data, written documents, and media content.
  9. Proven ability to plan and manage competing deadlines and priorities even under pressure.
  10. Fluency in English and Arabic.

Desirable skills, knowledge and experience:

  2. Understanding of conflict dynamics and peacebuilding and/or development initiatives in Libya.
  3. Experience with the editorial standards of the BBC or an equivalent global public service media organisation.
